We can type 100 words per minute, but we cannot spell simple words without autocorrect anymore. We traded understanding for speed without noticing.

The Autocorrect Problem

Think about the last time you wrote a difficult word without help. Your phone or laptop fixed it before you even finished. Over time, your brain stops trying. This is called cognitive offloading.

When you know a tool will remember for you, your brain does not bother to store it. Studies show students who rely heavily on spell check score lower on spelling tests when the tool is removed. Your fingers know the pattern, but your brain forgot the letters.

Handwriting vs Typing: What Science Says

A famous Princeton study in 2014 compared students who took notes by hand versus those who typed. The typists took more notes because they were faster. But the handwriters understood the material more deeply. Why?

Because handwriting is slow, you cannot write every word. You have to listen, process, and summarize in your own words. Typing is so fast that you just copy word for word without processing.

You get a full transcript but zero understanding. That is why many top universities now encourage handwritten notes for complex subjects.

How Typing Hurts Memory

When you type a phone number, address, or new idea, you instantly forget it because you know it is saved. Before smartphones, people remembered 20 phone numbers. Now most people remember 2 or 3.

Your brain treats the keyboard and cloud as external memory. It is efficient, but it makes your internal memory weaker. You are faster at capturing information, but worse at keeping it.

How to Type Smart, Not Just Fast

Fast typing is not the enemy; mindless typing is. The fix is to add friction when it matters. For important emails, type a first draft quickly, then retype the key points from memory without looking. That forces your brain to process.

For learning, take notes by hand first, then type a clean version later.

That two-step process builds both speed and understanding. Also, turn off autocorrect for 30 minutes a day when you write. It is annoying at first, but you will see how many words you actually cannot spell anymore. That awareness is the first step to fixing it.

Conclusion

We should not type slower, we should type more intentionally. Speed is great for capturing, but slow thinking is needed for understanding. Use typing for what it is good at, but do not let it replace the hard work your brain needs to do.

Typing fast feels like a skill, but it is making us worse at spelling, memory, and deep thinking.
