The Importance of Dua for Umrah – What You Should Know
Performing Umrah gives Muslims spiritual purity and is an important Sunnah. When you perform Umrah, you get many rewards, like strengthening your bond with Allah and having your sins forgiven.
“One Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and another Umrah.” – Bukhari, Muslim
There are many other blessings too, and you become beloved by Allah. Following Islamic teachings is important, including learning the dua for Umrah and practicing other rituals.
Dua for Umrah and Rituals for Spiritual Blessings – Key Insights
As Muslims, we should follow the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and perform all the rituals of Umrah properly. The rituals of Umrah include making intentions, performing Tawaaf, praying, drinking Zamzam water, and performing Sa’ee, and Halaq.

Start Your Journey with Prayers: The Power of Dua for Umrah
When you begin your journey to Makkah, start by reciting a dua for a safe journey, seeking Allah’s blessings with heartfelt sincerity. Saying dua throughout your trip ensures your safety. Reading a dua for traveling by plane is also a good practice. Here is a dua for safe travel:
. سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقْلِبُونَ
“Glory unto Him Who created this transportation for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord, we shall return.” (Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14)
Preparing for Ihraam – Essential Steps
Making Niyyah is crucial in Islam when performing any deed. Before starting Umrah, ensure your Niyyah is sincere. When preparing for Umrah, Muslims must follow Shariah guidelines.
At Meeqaat, perform ghusl if possible; otherwise, do wudhoo. Then, wear Ihraam, which consists of two white sheets that symbolize equality among pilgrims. Women should cover their entire bodies, while men can apply itr (perfume).
Pray 2 raka’at nafl with the intention of Ihraam. In the first raka’at, recite ‘Qul yaa ayyuhal kaafiroon,’ and in the second raka’at, recite ‘Qul huwallaahu ahad.’ After this, sit on the prayer mat and make the niyyah of Umrah by saying:
اللهم اني أُرِيدُ العُمْرَةَ فَيَسِرُهَا لِي وَتَقَبَّلُهَا مِن
“O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah. Make it easy for me and accept it from me.”
Next, recite the following dua for Umrah, known as Talbiyah, three times:
لبيك اللهم لبيك – لَبَّيْكَ لا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لا شَرِيكَ لكَ
“Here I am at Your Service, O Lord, here I am. Here I am, no partner do You have, here I am. Truly, the Praise and the Favour is Yours, and the Sovereignty. No partner do You have.”
Men should recite these words loudly, while women should recite them quietly. Afterward, recite Durood Shareef and continue reciting Talbiyah as much as possible, whether you are standing, sitting, traveling, lying down, or walking.
Performing Umrah in Makkah Mukarramah
After wearing Ihraam, say istighfaar and recite the Talbiyah continuously until you arrive in Makkah. Enter the holy city of Makkah with an open heart and respect, leaving behind all worries to purify yourself. Upon reaching Al Masjidul Haraam, step in with your right foot first and say:
بسمِ اللهِ وَالصَّلَوةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ اللهم انتم لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
“In the name of Allah. May the Peace and Salutations (of Allah) be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your Mercies.”
When you see the Ka’bah, say these words three times:
الله اكبر لا إله إلا الله
“Allah is the greatest. There is no deity except Allah.”
Next, recite Durood and make your supplications while standing and facing the Ka’bah. Remember, any dua you make at this time is especially powerful. One important dua for Umrah to recite is:
“O Allah, when you take me away from this world, take me in the state of Imaan. O Allah, enter me into Jannah without any account. O Allah, accept all my du’as and keep me steadfast on Deen.”
Seek Allah’s blessings with each supplication at this holy place.
“At Al Kaaba, dua becomes a spiritual connection between the pilgrim and Allah.”
Mas’alah: A woman in the state of Haydh or Nifaas cannot enter the Masjid.
Seeking Divine Blessings While Performing Tawaaf
When you start Tawaaf, an important part of Umrah, remember to make plenty of du’aas and keep Allah in your thoughts. You can also recite verses from the Qur’an quietly so you don’t disturb others. Begin by heading towards the corner of the Ka’bah where Al Hajarul Aswad is located.
When you reach Al Hajarul Aswad, position yourself to face the Kaaba, with Al Hajarul Aswad on the right side of your right shoulder. Stop reciting Talbiyah and make your intention (niyyah) to perform Tawaaf.
Take a small step to your right so you are properly aligned with Al Hajarul Aswad. Stand on the black line to show you’re correctly aligned. Lift your hands to your ears and say:
بسمِ اللهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمدُ
“In the Name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and all Praise is for Allah.”
Place both hands on Al Hajarul Aswad and gently kiss it. If you can’t kiss it, touch it with both hands or one hand. Alternatively, raise your hands towards it and say:
بسمِ اللهِ الله اكبر
“In the Name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.”
This act is known as Istilaam and should be done at the end of each round of Tawaaf while standing on the black line and facing Al Hajarul Aswad. Walk around the Ka’bah to your right, keeping the Ka’bah on your left side, until you return to Al Hajarul Aswad. Perform Istilaam here to complete one round. You need to complete seven rounds in total for Tawaaf.
After completing the seven rounds, perform Istilaam again and go to Maqaami Ibraaheem to pray two raka’at.It is Sunnah to recite ‘Qul yaa ayyuhal kaafiroon’ in the first unit of prayer and ‘Qul huwallaahu ahad’ in the second unit. If there is no space at Maqaami Ibraaheem, you can pray elsewhere in the Masjid.
Next, go to the well of Zamzam and drink its water while facing the Ka’bah. After drinking, visit Multazam, hug the wall of the Ka’bah, and make du’aa. Du’aa made here is especially accepted by Allah. You can visit Multazam before going to the well of Zamzam if you prefer.
Return to Al Hajarul Aswad for another Istilaam before starting Sa’ee. This Istilaam is recommended.
Important Points
No specific du’aas are required for Tawaaf. You can ask for whatever you need in this life and the next.
Hateem is part of the Ka’bah. Make sure you walk around it to complete Tawaaf.
Ramal (walking briskly) during the first three rounds is Sunnah for men.
Idhtibaa (uncovering the right shoulder) is a Sunnah practice for men during Tawaaf.
Touching Al Ruknul Yamaani with your hands is sufficient. There is no need to kiss or raise hands at this corner.
Recite this du’aa between Al Ruknul Yamaani and Al Hajarul Aswad:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
“O Allah, grant us goodness in this world, and goodness in the hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the fire.”
Keep the Ka’bah on your left side throughout Tawaaf. Make sure your back, chest, or right arm does not face the Ka’bah.
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Touching Al Hajarul Aswad removes sins. Performing Tawaaf properly is rewarded as if freeing a slave. Every step taken during Tawaaf removes a sin and earns a good deed.” (Tirmidhi)
Performing Sa’ee: The Sacred Journey Between Safa and Marwa
After completing Istilaam, begin your Sa’ee by walking towards Safa. Sa’ee involves walking back and forth between Safa and Marwa seven times, commemorating the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
Start by climbing Safa until you reach a point where you can see the Ka’bah through the pillars of Al Masjidul Haraam. Make your intention for Sa’ee, face the Ka’bah, and raise your hands to make a supplication. Say three times:
الله اكبر لا إله إلا الله
“Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity except Allah.”
Recite Durood Shareef and make du’aa, as this is a special place where prayers are answered. While walking between Safa and Marwa, keep remembering Allah and make supplications.
When you reach the green lights, increase your pace to a gentle run until you reach the next set of lights. Resume walking towards Marwa. Women should walk at a regular pace between the green lights. On Marwa, find a spot where you can see the Ka’bah and repeat the same actions as you did on Safa. This completes one round.
NOTE: Although the Ka’bah cannot be seen from Marwa, you should still face the direction of the Ka’bah.
Return from Marwa to Safa following the same steps. Each time you reach Safa, you complete another round. Continue this process until you have completed seven rounds, ending at Marwa.
Once you finish the seven rounds, it is recommended to offer two raka’at in Al Masjidul Haraam. During these prayers, it is Sunnah to recite:
رَبِّ اغْفِرُ وَارحَمُ أَنْتَ الْأَعْةُ الأَكْرَمُ
“O my Lord, forgive and have mercy. You are the most Majestic, the most Generous.”
Halaq: The Sacred Ritual to Complete Umrah
After finishing Sa’ee, you need to perform Halaq, which involves either shaving your head or trimming your hair. Shaving the head is seen as more rewarding. For men, this means shaving the entire head or trimming at least 1 inch from each hair. Women should cut more than 1 inch from the end of their hair.
Once you have shaved or trimmed your hair, you have completed the rituals of Umrah. At this point, the restrictions of Ihraam will be lifted.
As you conclude your Umrah, remember to make a dua for Umrah. May Allah accept your Umrah and bless you abundantly.
